Legal document checklist for getting married abroad

Which documents are needed will depend on the destination and the personal situation of both you and your partner (i.e. both single, divorced, widowed etc).

Documents need to be the originals but not all these are needed for every destination and in some cases just a passport will do!

The legal documents required will consist of the following:

  • Birth certificate/full birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Decree absolute
  • Previous marriage certificate (widowed)
  • Death certificate (widowed)
  • Adoption certificate
  • Change of name deed poll
  • Certificate of no impediment

In certain places (like Spain for example) there maybe residency issues to consider.
