So you and your partner have chosen Mexico as your wedding destination.

Now this has been decided, you then may find yourselves asking “what do I need to get married in Mexico?” Unfortunately you will find that there are various administration requirements that need to be carried out before you can both send out those important invites saying “we are getting in married in Mexico.”

Fantastic service, I strongly recommend it

Some of the research you have done already may have left you a little confused, as the planning and completion of your Mexican wedding documents require visits to a Notary public to get the translations notarised, and posting your documents to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in Milton Keynes. This can be time consuming and costly (depending on where you live and have to travel from).

So what are the legal requirements for getting married in Mexico?

Mexico’s wedding requirements like for most countries will vary from person to person depending on your life history. These may also vary depending on whether you and your partner are both British or not. If you are not, then the requirements may change slightly.

When getting married in Mexico you will both have to produce a birth certificate, this is a standard requirement. If either party has been previously married, then the documents required for getting married in Mexico are shown below.

Documents needed for two British nationals getting married in Mexico
Single Divorced Widow/er Name Changed/
Adopted
Full Birth Certificate Required Required Required Required
Decree Absolute Not required Required Not required Not required
Marriage and Death Certificate Not required Not required Required Not required
Change of Name Deed Poll or Adoption Certificate Not required Not required Not required Required

Please note that the above are national guidelines as issued by the Mexican Embassy.
Sometimes, requirements for particular hotels/regions can differ or change from the national guidelines. We strongly recommend that you check with your travel agent or directly with the hotel to get final confirmation on the combination of legal documents you require for your ceremony.
